Penang
A group of friends decided to open a restaurant serving Southeast Asian Cuisine and Penang was opened in 2002. The Chefs are trained in Malaysia to enhance the foods authentic flavor. Located at the third level of The Podium in Ortigas, its surroundings are simple with Asian influences.
We ordered the Roti Canai (Indian inspired flattened bread) while browsing through the menu. It came with a curry sauce that had just the right amount of spice, which we managed to finish in a flash. We started with the Tom Yang Goong (hot ft sour shrimp soup with lemon grass) which was flavored in a red curry paste. The taste of the spice and sour bite gave the soup an aromatic and delicious flavor. Our main course consisted of Beef Rendang (beet slices simmered in fragrant herbs ft spices), Lapu-Lapu with Tamarind Sauce (fried and topped with the Thai inspired sauce), Nonya Fried Rice (mix with Chinese sausage and Palad (dried fish) flakes) and Nasi Lemar (a Malaysian inspired classic that combines sambal, steamed kangkong, peanuts, boiled egg, ft steamed coconut rice); which was a full meal in itself with all the ingredients served in one plate!
Penang caters to families; this is why you will find the portions guite large and good enough to share. They offer discounts to regular customers, making this eatery a good place to go if you are a big group. A new branch will be opened in December 2004 at The Promenade located across the Greenhills Theater.
