Such are the words that instantly pop into one’s mind after having stepped into Gaita Fores’ Pepato, the latest addition to sister restaurants’ Cibo and Cafe Bola. This restaurant is the most upscale of the three as it attracts a clientele of yuppies and urbanites eager for a fun night out. Its plush interiors and hip art-deco design make it a happening and meeting place for Manila’s young and the restless.

Forget all cholesterol qualms and dash to Pepato for its Roasted Bone Marrow alone, and do try for yourself what many have been exalting. Here the ever-popular Filipino Bulalo is given quite a spin as the kitchen serves this delicacy piping hot, cooked scrumptiously and bursting with flavor. Spread on garlic bread and drizzled with lemon and black truffles, this dish is a perennial favorite. Other appetizers not to be missed are the Caprese Tower, an impressive salad of sliced buffalo mozzarella, tomatoes and basil as well as the Grilled Scallops served alongside Chorizo Panna Cotta. Both are playful and original and its intense flavors are delightful. A memorable dish from Pepato’s extensive list of fresh pasta choices is the Green Ravioli made of scrumptious crabmeat and crab roe. Main dishes include a perfectly cooked Bistecca alia Florentina (more than enough for two to three very hungry eaters!), perfectly seared and crusted on the outside yet tender, succulent and oozing with juices from within.

While many have claimed that the bill does add up quite fast and that prices can be a tad bit steep, a wiser alternative would be to enjoy the fosfer portions on almost all pastas. Smaller portions served at cheaper prices are the perfect solution yet-crafted for that fickle and finicky eater who simply can’t get enough of Pepato’s best!
